Embrace the Journey: There’s no such thing as being behind in life

Dear MentalWealth Club,

Feeling confident about where you are in your journey can be difficult. It’s not easy to push through the challenges, the stagnant era’s or even the success. Understanding your path and accepting what each level will bring requires tons of grace and resilience.

The real value is in the process, therefore it’s best to embrace the journey. Most prefer some sort of blueprint or instructions to follow, but that will only provide a false sense of control; and that just isn’t real. It’s much healthier to navigate the ups and downs of life by finding peace amidst the chaos. Many of us are facing the same struggle – the feeling of being behind in life.

Have you ever found yourself comparing your progress to others, then suddenly feeling the urge to create a new life with hopes of getting ahead? I’ve been there and it’s usually around 2am; not a good feeling. The good news is that’s all it really is, just a feeling. And feelings are real, but they are not facts.

The truth is, there’s no such thing as being behind. In our fast-paced world it's essential to remember that your journey is unique. It’s also more important to focus on being present in your journey rather than speeding up the timeline.

Besides, what’s the rush? If no one has told you yet, you look absolutely amazing when you’re taking your time and doing your own thing! Not sure what that looks like?

Well, here are some strategies to help you figure out how to shift your perspective and embrace your own path:

Practice mindfulness & gratitude

Cultivating gratitude can be a powerful tool in combating feelings of inadequacy. Try simple mindfulness exercises such as creating a list of your accomplishments, reciting affirmations, journaling about your “why” to recall the purpose of your mission, or reflecting on your growth in conversation with a trusted friend. This all helps you appreciate the present moment and acknowledge your development.

Set boundaries & surround yourself w/positivity

Understand what led you to compare. Is it social media, certain people, or specific circumstances? Whatever triggers those feelings need to be removed or have limited access to you. Surround yourself with supportive people, spend time in uplifting environments, and consume encouraging media. Also, spend some time alone. Well planned alone time helps to realign your energy.

Swap social media w/reading books that inspire

Explore my handpicked selection of books that offer insights into personal growth, resilience, and finding your own pace in life. These titles can be  valuable companions on your journey towards self-acceptance.

  • The Anxious Achiever: Turn Your Biggest Fears Into Your Leadership Superpower (Morra Aarons-Mele)

  • The Happiness Advantage: How a Positive Brain Fuels Success in Work & Life (Shawn Achor)

Practice self-compassion

Learn to treat yourself with kindness and understanding, even in times of self-doubt. Also, a little self-care goes a long way. Remember, you’re worth the investment; especially if you’ve been busy goal digging.

Own your individuality by leaning into your strengths

Try identifying what you like, what you do well and what makes you feel proud. Then make it your business to do those things as often as possible. This will help to remind you that you’re a natural success.

Remember, life is not a race, but a tailor made journey filled with its own set of challenges and joys. Together, we can learn to embrace every moment and find fulfillment in the here and now.
